The survival of dark matter halos in the cluster Cl 0024 + 16

چکیده
Theories of structure formation in a cold dark matter dominated Universe predict that massive clusters of galaxies assemble from the hierarchical merging of lower mass subhalos. Exploiting strong and weak gravitational lensing signals inferred from panoramic Hubble Space Telescope imaging data, we present a high resolution reconstruction of the mass distribution in the massive, lensing cluster Cl 0024+16 at z = 0.39. Applying galaxy-galaxy lensing techniques we track the fate of dark matter subhalos as a function of projected cluster-centric radius out to 5 Mpc, well beyond the virial radius. We report the first detection of the statistical lensing signal of dark matter subhalos associated with late-type galaxies in clusters. The mass of a fiducial dark matter halo that hosts an early type L galaxy varies from M = 6.3 −2.0 × 10 11 M⊙ within r < 0.6 Mpc, 1.3 +0.8 −0.6 × 10 M⊙ within r < 2.9 Mpc and increases further to M = 3.7 +1.4 −1.1 × 10 12 M⊙ in the outskirts. The mass of a typical dark matter subhalo that hosts an L galaxy increases with projected cluster-centric radius in line with expectations

On the Mass Profile of Galaxy Cluster CL 0024+1654 Inferred from Strong Lensing
Observations of a flat density profile in the cores of dark-matter-dominated halos on the two extremes of mass for virialized objects in the universe, dwarf galaxies and galaxy clusters, present a serious challenge to the current standard theory of structure formation involving Cold Dark Matter (CDM). By contrast, N-body simulations of halo formation in the latter indicate density profiles whic...
متن کاملRings of Dark Matter in Collisions between Clusters of Galaxies
Several lines of evidence suggest that the galaxy cluster Cl0024+17, an apparently relaxed system, is actually a collision of two clusters, the interaction occurring along our line of sight. Recent lensing observations suggest the presence of a ring-like dark matter structure, which has been interpreted as the result of such a collision. In this paper we present N -body simulations of cluster c...
متن کاملDiscovery of a Ringlike Dark Matter Structure in the Core of the Galaxy
We present a comprehensive mass reconstruction of the rich galaxy cluster Cl 0024+17 at z ≃ 0.4 from ACS data, unifying both strongand weak-lensing constraints. The weak-lensing signal from a dense distribution of background galaxies (∼ 120 arcmin) across the cluster enables the derivation of a high-resolution parameter-free mass map. The strongly-lensed objects tightly constrain the mass struc...
متن کاملThe Orbital Structure of Dark Matter Halos with Gas
With the success of the Chandra and XMM missions and the maturation of gravitational lensing techniques, powerful constraints on the orbital structure of cluster dark matter halos are possible. I show that the X-ray emissivity and mass of a galaxy cluster uniquely specify the anisotropy and velocity dispersion profiles of its dark matter halo. I consider hydrostatic as well as cooling flow scen...
متن کاملFormation of Large Structures in the Acceleration Universe with a Hybrid Expansion Law
In the current paper, we have studied the effect of dark energy on for-mation where dark energy exists in the background. For this purpose, we used both WMAP9 and Planck data to study how the radius changes with redshift in these mod-els. We used different data sets to fix the cosmological parameters to obtain a solution for a spherical region under collapse. The mechanism of structure formation f...
